Samuel Augustus Maverick was a Texan lawyer, politician and land baron who-in a time where all followed the range convention of the period and rather barbarically burned their brands into newly acquired cattle-steadfastly refused to brand his cattle. The cattle roamed freelyon the Conquista Ranch in the San Antonio River area, wandered around, grazed and multiplied. The reasons as to why he did this are somewhat blurred in history but fact is that it caused quite a stir at the time. And as a result, around 1867, the word “Maverick” entered the English lexicon, meaning an unmarked or unbranded range animal as well as a slang term for someone who exhibits independent mindedness.

It is often so hard to step away from the herd and survey the land with a fresh pair of eyes, that one tends to forget that what really drives us all forward is exactly that need for independence, discovery and passion.

Steve Jobs probably hit the nail on the head when he said “Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do”.
